My Kelty daypack (see it in the logo above) is close to 15 years old and it has served me well for hundreds of miles of backcountry trails. During the last few trips, I have noticed small tears developing as well as sticky zippers and it is no longer water repellent. While the Kelty has some life left in it, I have desired a new pack for some time and I have been thinking of a hydration pack utilizing lighter and stronger materials.
I found my new pack in the Cabela’s catalog about a year ago and started saving my “Cabela’s Bucks” (cash back awards from credit card use) to get it. Last week I had finally saved enough and placed an order for the Fourteener by Camelbak. The product description at Cabela’s reads:
The Fourteener is a serious go-light and go-far hydration system and lightweight day pack all in one. It has a 100-oz. Omega™ HydroTanium™ reservoir and 1,650 cu. in. of cargo space for your bare necessities. It has a Ventilated N.V. I.S.™ back panel with custom-fitting Dynamic Suspension™ harness and vented load-bearing waistbelt. Quick-access overflow storage with compression straps. Stowable tool loops. Lash points.
Go-light go-far! That’s what I need!
Tonight I loaded my new pack with all my winter gear including 100 oz of water and went out to give it a try. I like it! It rides much different than my old pack and I am sure it will take a hike or two to learn how to load the pack for optimum performance. But I like it! I have a high country hike near Leadville Colorado planned for next weekend so I can really put it to the test then.
