Dictionary.com defines Camouflage as- concealment by some means that alters or obscures the appearance.
I own high-tech camouflage outerwear that I use when hunting (Clothing that I paid entirely too much for I am sure). I have always questioned its true effectiveness because I have seen others hunt with no special covering do as well as I. To see truly exquisite camouflage one must look to nature.
Tonight as I walked along the creek, Molly alerted me to a possible threat by becoming agitated, staring intently into the nearby brush. Her eyes searched as her nose pointed the direction. A deep growl rumbled from her chest.
I looked and looked but was unable to see what was up. I tried several times to continue our walk but Molly stayed fix on the ghost before us. Again, I looked into the tangle of branches, expecting to see a rabbit or bird, and to my surprise, I saw two eyes looking back at me. A coyote stood motionless not 40 feet from me. He quickly realized I had finally seen him, giving me seconds to snap a photo before he ran off.
I’m not sure Molly had ever seen the coyote; she probably just caught his sent and felt his presence. The fact that I was so close but still unable to see him is a little unnerving.
